Role

The Pharmacy Manager will oversee and manage the clinical and retail pharmacy operations of Zuid-Afrikaans and ZAH Day Hospital. The role is responsible for ensuring the safe, effective, and ethical delivery of pharmaceutical services in compliance with professional, legal, and regulatory standards. Key responsibilities include clinical support to hospital departments, procurement and stock management, staff leadership, financial oversight, retail pharmacy management, and quality improvement. The Pharmacy Manager will also serve as a liaison between the Clinical Pharmacist and Medical practitioners to support patient-centred care and collaboration. The Pharmacy Manager will form part of the Senior Management team for the hospitals.

Responsibilities

1. Operational Management

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of both the clinical and retail pharmacy.
  • Ensure efficient workflow and service delivery across all pharmacy functions.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Ensure robust systems for record-keeping, dispensing accuracy, and medication safety.

2. Clinical and Pharmaceutical Care

  • Lead the hospital’s Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) programme in collaboration with the Clinical Pharmacist.
  • Promote rational, evidence-based use of antimicrobials through engagement with doctors, nurses, and pharmacists.
  • Oversee AMS-related monitoring, audits, reporting, and education.
  • Foster collaboration between pharmacy, infection control, and clinical teams to sustain best practices.
  • Promote and improve the hospital’s Ethical formulary.

3. Procurement and Inventory Control

  • Manage procurement, ordering, and stock control for both hospital and retail pharmacy.
  • Oversee the GRV store and central store, ensuring effective stock control and distribution to clinical areas.
  • Implement and monitor FEFO (First-Expiry-First-Out) practices and conduct regular stock audits.
  • Ensure compliance with cold chain requirements and the handling of scheduled and non-scheduled medicines.
  • Manage credit notes, returns, and stock packs for nursing departments.

4. Retail Pharmacy Management

  • Oversee retail pharmacy operations including OTC products, health items, and merchandise.
  • Drive retail sales growth through customer service excellence, merchandising, and marketing strategies.
  • Monitor retail performance and implement initiatives to optimise turnover.
  • Ensure effective retail stock control, display, and pricing.

5. Financial and Budget Management

  • Prepare, manage, and monitor pharmacy budgets and monthly reports.
  • Track revenue, cost control, and financial performance, identifying areas for improvement.
  • Improve operational efficiency and profitability of the pharmacy.
  • Authorise supplier payments and oversee pharmacy accounts.

6. Employee Leadership and HR Management

  • Lead, supervise, and mentor pharmacy staff (pharmacists, assistants, interns, and retail staff).
  • Manage duty rosters, leave planning, and staff performance reviews.
  • Promote staff development through training, CPD opportunities, and compliance with professional requirements.

7. Legal and Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with SAPC, SAHPRA, GPP, DOH, and hospital regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain valid pharmacy licenses and ensure all pharmacists remain duly registered.
  • Prepare for and manage external audits, inspections, and compliance reviews.

8. Quality and Risk Management

  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Participate in hospital quality assurance committees, including infection control.
  • Implement risk management systems to ensure safe storage, dispensing, and handling of medicines.

Education

  • BPharm Degree or equivalent.

Experience and Requirements

  • Registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).
  • Minimum of 10 years’ relevant pharmacy experience, with at least 5 years in a managerial role.
  • Experience in both hospital and retail pharmacy is advantageous.
  • In-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical legislation, GPP, and clinical practices.
  • Proficiency in pharmacy and stock management systems.
  • Strong financial management and budgeting skills.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
