Role

To provide professional pharmaceutical services including accurate dispensing, clinical guidance, medicine supply management, and supervision of pharmacy support staff. The Pharmacist will actively contribute to quality improvement, patient safety, and regulatory compliance within the pharmacy and the wider hospital environment.

Responsibilities

Medication Dispensing & Patient Care

  • Accurately and timeously dispense prescriptions in line with legal and ethical standards.
  • Verify the authenticity, appropriateness, and completeness of prescriptions.
  • Counsel patients on medicine use, side effects, interactions, and storage.
  • Provide pharmaceutical information and support to doctors, nurses, and other clinical staff.


Controlled Substances & Section 21 Management

  • Serve as custodian of Schedule 5 & 6 medicines and ensure full legislative compliance.
  • Manage Section 21 applications and submissions via the SAHPRA portal.
  • Maintain controlled drug registers, secure storage, documentation, and reporting.
  • Conduct stock counts and audits, reconciling discrepancies immediately.


Stock Management & Procurement Support

  • Ensure proper storage, handling, and packaging of medicines per GPP standards.
  • Support stock forecasting, replenishment, and optimal inventory control.
  • Implement measures to minimise wastage and manage near-expiry, slow-moving, and high-cost items.
  • Communicate shortages and recommend suitable alternatives to clinical teams.
  • Participate in cyclical and annual stock counts.


Operational Efficiency & Administration

  • Maintain accurate, compliant pharmaceutical records.
  • Adhere to operational standards, SOPs, and administrative procedures.
  • Assist with ordering, invoicing, and month-end processes.
  • Provide after-hours support for the emergency medication cupboard.
  • Participate in accreditation and regulatory inspections (DOH, SAPC, COHSASA, OHSC).


Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work collaboratively with doctors, nurses, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Escalate medicine-related risks proactively to ensure patient safety.
  • Participate in committees such as Quality, Risk, and Infection Control where required.


People Supervision & Support

  • Supervise and mentor Pharmacist Assistants, learners, and Intern Pharmacists.
  • Delegate tasks appropriately within SAPC scope-of-practice guidelines.
  • Promote a positive, professional working environment.


Learning & Development

  • Stay updated on pharmaceutical best practices and therapeutic advancements.
  • Attend CPD activities as required by SAPC.
  • Participate in in-service training and support clinical education.

Education

Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) or equivalent degree.

Experience and Requirements

  • Registered as a Pharmacist with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working in a private healthcare facility.
  • Proven experience in dispensing, clinical support, and hospital pharmacy operations.
  • Sound knowledge of GPP standards, relevant legislation, and SAPC regulations.
