Role

Zuid-Afrikaans Hospital has an exciting opportunity for an experienced, dynamic and results-driven Dispensary Manager to join our Pharmacy team.


This is a key leadership position responsible for the effective management of the hospital's dispensary and retail pharmacy operations. The successful candidate will provide strong operational leadership while ensuring the delivery of safe, accurate and efficient pharmaceutical services, exceptional patient care and continued compliance with all applicable regulatory and professional standards.


The ideal candidate will be a strong pharmacy professional who combines clinical and regulatory knowledge with sound business acumen, operational insight and proven people leadership skills.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership and People Management: Lead, manage and develop pharmacists, pharmacist assistants and pharmacy support staff. Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, service excellence and continuous improvement. Manage staffing, rosters and resource utilisation while supporting employee development and performance management.
  • Dispensary Operations: Oversee the day-to-day operations of the dispensary to ensure safe, accurate and efficient dispensing practices. Manage workflow, prescription turnaround times and medication deliveries to clinical areas, proactively identifying service delivery challenges and implementing corrective actions.
  • Medication Safety and Quality: Ensure compliance with dispensing procedures and medication safety standards. Oversee prescription validation, pharmacist interventions and patient counselling, and ensure dispensing errors are appropriately investigated with effective corrective and preventative actions implemented.
  • Retail and Front Shop Performance: Drive the performance and profitability of the retail pharmacy and front shop. Monitor sales trends, product performance and gross profit margins while ensuring optimal stock availability, effective merchandising and excellent customer service standards.
  • Stock and Inventory Management: Provide oversight of pharmacy stock levels, replenishment processes, receiving, pricing and stock allocation. Monitor slow-moving, dormant and soon-to-expire stock and implement strategies to minimise expiries, stock losses and shrinkage. Oversee cycle counts and stock takes and ensure stock variances are effectively investigated and resolved.
  • Financial and Operational Performance: Monitor productivity, operational costs and resource utilisation to support the achievement of pharmacy financial and operational objectives. Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce rework and strengthen cost control.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Governance: Ensure full compliance with SAPC, SAHPRA, Good Pharmacy Practice and all applicable pharmaceutical legislation and regulatory requirements. Maintain audit and inspection readiness and oversee the effective management and control of scheduled medicines and required registers.
  • Continuous Improvement: Drive initiatives aimed at improving operational efficiency, patient service, prescription turnaround times, stock accuracy and overall pharmacy performance. Remain informed of developments in pharmaceutical practice, legislation and retail pharmacy trends.


Education

  • Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) degree.
  • Current registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a Pharmacist.

Experience and Requirements

  • Relevant experience within a hospital and/or retail pharmacy environment.
  • Proven supervisory or management experience within a pharmacy environment.
  • Sound knowledge of pharmaceutical legislation, SAPC requirements and Good Pharmacy Practice.
  • Strong understanding of dispensary operations, medication safety and stock management.
  • Experience in retail pharmacy operations and financial performance management will be advantageous.
  • Strong leadership, analytical, problem-solving and organisational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • A strong patient and customer service orientation.
