Our visitors
Visiting considerations
You may be requested to leave the patient’s bed/room when doctors visit, when procedures need to be done or when a health care provide, for example a physiotherapist, needs to work with the patient. Please understand that the patient’s privacy needs to be respected. It greatly assists us when the health care providers need to work without family and visitors around the patient.
ICU wards
- Only close relatives may visit the patient in the unit;
- No children under the age of 12 may visit in the ICU;
- Kindly visit only during visiting hours to ensure routine care can be provided.
- We have “lights out” between 13:00 & 14:00. Please do not visit during these hours to ensure our patients rest well.
- Please identify a designated person to enquire regarding the patient to ensure the nurse looking after your family member can spend maximum time at the bedside;
- Kindly ensure that all valuables, including cell phones are taken home;
- No photo’s may be taken of the patient in any ICU
Hand hygiene
Hand-washing is still the best prevention against infection. Zuid Afrikaans Hospital adhere’s to the World Health Organisation’s 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene. It has been clinically proven that by washing/sanitising your hands in the following way, you will greatly reduce the risk of infection to yourself as well as others.
- before touching a patient,
- before clean/aseptic procedures,
- after body fluid exposure/risk,
- after touching a patient, and
- after touching patient surroundings.
Hand sanitisers
Hand sanitisers are conveniently placed at each general ward room door and upon entrance and exit of ICU’s.
Apply the sanitiser to the palm of your hand and rub your hands together. Keep rubbing over all the surfaces of your fingers and hands until they are dry.
General wards
- Please consider other patients in the room with you, if you are in a multi-bed room.
- Please avoid large groups of visitors inside the room – rather visit on the veranda or make turns with smaller groups at a time. The general guideline is two visitors per bed.
- If the nursing staff needs to attend to you or other patients in the room, visitors might be requested to wait outside for a while.
- No visitors may sit/lie on the patient’s bed during his/her stay. Please use the chairs or benches.
- Unfortunately no children under 12 years of age may be allowed.
- If your family and friends bring you flowers, please can you ask them that it be in a pot, or bring a pot, as the ward does not have flowerpots
