Biokinetic Rehabilitation Centre
Zuid-Afrikaans Hospital offers a complete biokinetic rehabilitation centre that specialises in preventative and rehabilitative care.
The Biokinetic Rehabilitation Centre specialises in helping people with any cardiac, pulmonary, metabolic and orthopaedic related conditions. A biokineticist is a specialised therapist (registered with the HPCSA) who prescribes preventative and rehabilitative exercise therapy to improve the client’s quality of life.
The centre is at Level 2 in the hospital with easy access to emergency facilities linked to the hospital. A registered ICU Nursing professional works in the Rehabilitation Facility.
The centre is very well equipped with various exercise equipment where you may exercise under the supervision of trained biokineticists to evaluate and support you on your journey to health.
Orthopaedic rehabilitation conducted
We have pre and post surgery rehabilitation (Lumbar, cervical, hip, knee, shoulder, etc.) for patients.
Cardiac rehabilitation is a specific programme consisting of education, exercise and other interventions to address the risk factors of Coronary Artery Disease. The aim being to help the cardiac patient to regain his/her strength, to prevent the condition from worsening and to reduce the risk of future heart problems.
Our nursing professional, Susan Venter drives the Cardiac rehabilitation program which starts in-hospital and she coordinates the first 6 weeks of their recovery. She is also known in hospital as the Rehab sister.
We help any cardiac patient with any of the following diagnoses with exercise intervention:
- Coronary artery
- Bypass surgery
- Stent implants
- Heart attacks (MI)
- Stable Angina
- Valve replacements
- Cardiac failure and Cardiomyopathy
We also have Preventative Programs for the patients with high risk for developing CAD, this would include patients with:
- High Cholesterol
- Obesity (We have a weight loss program)
- Unhealthy lifestyle (Smoking and Stress)
Patients with Asthma, COPD and emphysema can train with oxygen and be monitored at the centre by the biokineticists.
Exercise Rehabilitation for Other medical conditions
We help patients with conditions which fall under other “special population” disorders: obesity, diabetes, arthritis, renal patients and more.
Exercise programs to combat major depression, anxiety & substance abuse.
Sport specific rehabilitation and conditioning
We do sport specific tests on different components such as fitness levels, flexibility, muscle endurance, body composition etc. to improve performance.
Pilates classes and one on one training
We have an in-house advanced Classical Pilates instructor to help with core and stability exercises for those who prefer to do Pilates.
TRE – Tension & Trauma Release
We provide TRE (Tension and Trauma Release Exercise) services as we have two qualified TRE providers. TRE exercises help patients who suffer or who has suffered from Trauma, Stress and other life challenging situations. These exercises activate your body’s own natural ability to rebalance and release stress by neuromuscular and neurogenic tremor.
Other uses of the centre
The Biokinetic Rehabilitation Centre is also used by our physiotherapists who support patients with specific programmes for a full recovery.
